LESS EXCUSES. MORE ‘SPLAINING.

We’ve all been there. We made plans with people who bailed on us or showed up obnoxiously late and didn’t give us a heads-up, but DID give us a bucketful of lame excuses later that most likely ranged from, “I got stuck on the subway” to “Oh, was that TODAY?” to “I’ve just been so busy.” Well, for starters, don’t even pretend to make plans with people when you know you have no intention of carrying them out. (They won’t be hurt by something that was never said, but WILL be hurt by all the lies and deception that would no doubt be coming their way.)

LESS CHITCHAT. MORE CHOP CHOP.

After the longest 10 minutes of my life, I’ve finally reached the head of the line at my local coffee shop, only to have to wait another 10 minutes for Cathy Chats-A-Lot to finish telling Gabby Gabriele about her night out with Derek McDufus. So, thinking I simply forgot to remove my invisibility cloak that morning, I clear my throat, hoping to gain some attention … after all, I am the customer waiting to be attended to. If these clerks were more efficient at their jobs, they’d actually have MORE time for chatting with their buddies cuz they’d get so many customers taken care of in a shorter amount of time, they’d actually be creating more gaps in between customers, giving them more time to gossip about so-and-so who did blippity-bloo last night at the blah-blah place with that good-for-nothing blankity-blank.

LESS CELEBRITY. MORE TALENT.

It seems that nowadays, you can’t go to a Broadway show without a big Hollywood name attached to it. It’s like: SEAN HAYES (in, ummm, what’s it called? Oh yeah, “Promises Promises,” starring some other people you may have heard of). Or CATHERINE ZETA JONES (in that musical written by that guy). Or, CHRISTINA APPLEGATE (in that Fosse-somebody revival). Now, “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” THAT was a fantastic show! Sutton Foster (who won a Tony for her performance) is as actor-y as they get: amazing singer, great dancer and hilarious actress. I sat in the audience with a big smile the whole time in complete awe. I was even inspired to take tap dancing lessons! And I’ve been a stalker (ahem, pardon me, a fan) of hers ever since.

LESS DATING. MORE FRIENDING.

I’ve done my fair share of online dating, or, as I like to refer to it, man shopping. There’s nothing wrong with it, mind you, but I’m so tired of dissecting what makes a good mate and what doesn’t: “Well, let’s see … he’s 6’1”, great. He’s an executive at his company and makes $150,000 a year, fantastic. He loves dogs and cooking and movies, wonderful.  Uh-oh … he lives in Jersey City. Next.” Some of the greatest dates I ever had were with men I met by chance at a party or through a friend or in a cab. (Yup, I accepted a date with a guy I met in a cab. He was driving it at the time, which was a tad awkward, but whatev.) There’s something special about just meeting people and discovering, organically, whether or not you share a love of French circus clowns.
