| It seems that nowadays, you can’t go to a Broadway show without a big Hollywood name attached to it. It’s like: SEAN HAYES (in, ummm, what’s it called? Oh yeah, “Promises Promises,” starring some other people you may have heard of). Or CATHERINE ZETA JONES (in that musical written by that guy). Or, CHRISTINA APPLEGATE (in that Fosse-somebody revival). | Now, “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” THAT was a fantastic show! Sutton Foster (who won a Tony for her performance) is as actor-y as they get: amazing singer, great dancer and hilarious actress. I sat in the audience with a big smile the whole time in complete awe. I was even inspired to take tap dancing lessons! And I’ve been a stalker (ahem, pardon me, a fan) of hers ever since. | |||

| Hollywood, in its infinite wisdom, is coming out with a remake of “The Karate Kid” starring producer Will Smith’s son and Jackie Chan. Can you hear the gasps from us Generation Xers who grew up with the original? By the way, why haven’t we come up with a better generational nickname by now (thanks a lot, Douglas Copeland)? It’s like someone digging up the beloved, dead dog of your childhood and dressing him up in a plaid sweater and a hat. Fido never wore a freakin’ hat, you bastards! | Did I mention that Hollywood is also doing a remake of “Footloose”? Seriously? I mean, it was a pretty terrible movie to begin with, but for kids with even the slightest impulse to rebel, it was ours. The “Footloose“ soundtrack was one of the first albums of my own that I got when I was young, along with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” This is sacred ground. Obviously the ol’ movie machine has run out of original ideas, despite its huge population of screenwriters/waiters, so I have some suggestions. | |||

| American cultural growth since the start of the 21st century has been abysmal. Part of me wants to blame it on that anti-climatic Y2K scare, but maybe it goes deeper than that. What has happened over the last decade? Certainly 9/11 and its aftermath (two wars), but objectively, we’ve been stuck in neutral when it comes to a cultural progression. 100 years from now, they’re gonna dig up the 2000-2010 time capsule. Lets take a peek at what they’ll find. | So how do we remedy this little ten-year rut that we’re in? How do we encourage and cultivate some creativity, and ring in a cultural renaissance? First and foremost, we need to hear from you! Yes you. You may think you’re just one of the tens of thousands reading this site daily (not), but you’re so much more than that. Great ideas become viral when everyone contributes to the dialogue. Here… I will get y’all started with some suggestions. | |||
